WITH A $10 CAMERA BOUGHT in a Market Street hockshop, he begins recording the kaleidoscopic experience of the 60s and 70s in San Francisco. Roy Shigley’s crystalline imagery distills an emotional rite of passage through a unique slice of America’s cultural life. Friends and strangers in the throes of being exuberant, introspective, lost, loving and knowing is a reflection on what was gained, what has been lost and what is still to be learned. HIS WORK HAS BEEN AWARDED by the National Endowment for the Arts and praised by Anaïs Nin, who told him, “Your work is your diary.” Here in these pages is a photographic diary of an iconic age.

Jan 6, 2011Roy Wow - great surprise on my front porch today... Your beautiful book arrived and I have just absorbed every page. The contents and your acknowledgements give a nice preview of what is to come.... I really like the way the book flows and your poignant quotations are right on. Ah - the joyous spirit and Love that evokes from each image is so strong - it really created a yearning in my Soul for the 'good old days' What a unique period of time, and your images are powerful and yet subtle in capturing the spirit of that time. I love the 'everyday street scenes', the bonding and laughter, the nude couple with the baby in the 'Garden of Eden' is incredible, the couples, the crowds, the individuals are each so captivating. And I learned so much about your early years I had no idea about! Congratulations Shig on getting this fine work published and out in the world, I will treasure it and I know my old 'hippie friends' will delight in looking at this memory lane from your eyes and viewpoint.
Jan 6, 2011Literally just got the book in the mail and looked at it cover to cover! What a beautiful book, Roy. I was touched by the thoughtfulness of the quotes and I loved the pictures--lots of "characters" among them and fun to think what they were thinking/feeling/doing when the picture was taken. Great job!

Nothing would be the same, music, hair, fashion, sensibilities, . . . the way many of us saw the world and experienced and interacted with it. Our lives changed and so did the culture. From civil rights through the anti-war movement, to current change towards sexual orientation and marriage freedom. It started there and Roy was wandering those streets taking tens of thousands of pictures from 1962 through the 70s. Roy's pictures are magical, and he has arranged them to reflect his journey and internal process. I know this is only a small window on a vast collection that he took during those years. I am the proud owner of one of the first printings. I love this book and am buying it for my friends and my children. I... More > look forward to the next installment! Stephen< Less
