The idea of national sovereignty is explored. Why are there nations? What is the relationship between nationhood and sovereignty? The contributions of Christian theologians and philosophers are explored as they pertain to these questions. It is found that Christian thinkers developed the framework for understanding national or popular sovereignty, in opposition to the claims of universal jurisdiction of pope and emperor. These conclusions are applied to the contemporary debate surrounding the formation of the European Union.
