Freelancing 101: Launching Your Editorial Business, may be small in size but the information contained is huge; hugely important, that is. And, it’s magnificently affordable. I wish this book had been available when I entered the freelance world six years ago as it would have spared me from much aggravation and time. If you are considering becoming a freelancer, get this book. It provides a condensed version of the basics—such as the pros and cons of the business, rates, how to get paid, skills needed, the importance of networking, and my personal favorite, “Danger Zones.” There’s a handy list of pertinent resources at the back of the book, too. Ruth Thaler-Carter has worked as a full-time freelancer for some time now, she knows the business, and has won awards for her writing ability. Trust her to lead you down the right (freelancing) path. "The combination of Thaler-Carter’s honesty and her obvious veteran and expert status as a freelancer makes this booklet a motivating and valuable reference. From the start, Thaler-Carter is up front about the advantages of freelancing ... but she is also quite candid about the pitfalls that you may find yourself in if you do not think through the prospect of working for yourself carefully.... I find Freelancing 101 an inspiring, motivating, and practical resource that anyone with freelancing aspirations most definitely should read...." --Diane Martinez, a writing specialist for Kaplan University's Online Writing Center and a PhD candidate at Utah State University, in Technical Communication, the journal of the Society for Technical Communication, May 2010
