Ruti Eastman, by her own admission, collected her blogs into a book because she wanted to be able to call herself an “author”. Having known Ruti for something like 20 years, this is amazing to me. Why? Because being an author is the least of her praises. Nevertheless, I have admired her blogs, and was curious to see what Ruti considered her personal “best”. The title is drawn from one of her essays: “What if the meraglim had said, ‘Hey, Moshe! See these really big grapes? We can make really BIG wine…”? A great question. Perception is everything. Whining plays a role in several ways in this the process of aliyah. There’s the “whining” about wanting to make Israel home. Then there’s the “whining” that one often hears from recent olim as they adjust to life in Israel. The key is to take that “whine” and turn it into “really big grapes”. Ruti rarely whines (at least in public). In fact, as her essays show, she has the rare gift of being able to see G-d’s hand, and therefore His good, in... More > everything. The essays run the gamut from wry wit to poignant perception. Deeply personal, Ruti applies her genius to all aspects of aliyah - pre and post, joy and sorrow, the heights and the depths, the tearful and the hilarious. The book is like a movie, but viewed frame by frame. Someone should turn it into a novel. Ruti, are you listening?< Less

Memorable, palpable characters, in-depth scene/scenery descriptions, humor, attitude, and yes- fact is often stranger than fiction. And these, Lt. Friday, are facts. Too many books of this genre turn my stomach and/or lose my interest with both the "Whine" and "Grapes" either saccharine-sweet or nastily bitter. This body of work does neither and leaves me with an appetite for more. An absolute must-read for Olim of all flavours: new, old, wanna-be, would-never-consider-it-in-a-million-years, plus those "Left Behind" friends & relatives.
