Another Twist (for baritone saxophone and piano)

ByRyan Garber

Another Twist was written for Linda Bangs, baritone saxophonist, who teaches at the Darmstadt (Germany) Academy for Music and directs the South German Saxophone Orchestra. Near the mouthpiece of the baritone saxophone (and the other larger saxes), there is an additional loop that is not found on the tenor, alto, soprano, and smaller saxes. Very simply, the title, Another Twist, refers to this characteristic of the instrument and has no real significance in the form or content of the music. The composition is in three clear sections, the first, marked Allegro Furioso, is all about energy. The middle part is “slow and relaxed,” and showcases the lyrical nature of the instrument. After a gradual build up, a modified version of the Allegro Furioso concludes the piece. The premiere performance was given at the Akademie für Tonkunst, Darmstadt, Germany, March 3, 2007 by Linda Bangs. A studio recording by Bangs and pianist Annemi Egri is available on the Antes (Bella Musica) label.
