The Book of Were-Wolves is about lycanthropy, which is, in folklore, the magical ability to assume the form and characteristics of a wolf, or a delusion that one has become or assumed the characteristics of a wolf or other animal. The first ten chapters of this book constitute an essential work on the subject of werewolves. The author, Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924), took a rationalistic approach and his book has been perhaps the most frequently cited folkloric study of lycanthropy. He drew upon a vast body of observation, myth, and lore to explore the tradition of werewolves as a widespread and persistent theme in history. He blends science, superstition, and fiction to tell the full story of the strange creatures among us. There is also information about protection against werewolves. The second half of the book, however, concerns crimes only vaguely connected to lycanthropy, including grave desecration, cannibalism, and blood fetish.
