Brief Light is a collection of short poems meditating on human experience, largely but not exclusively through traditional poetic forms. Their bent is simultaneously lyric and narrative, as if novels had been compressed into fourteen lines and peopled by quiet, inward-looking characters. A reader writes, "Sally Thomas is one of the best American poets writing. Her direct language, skillful use of irony, mastery of form, and quietly compassionate voice combine to give her work a humane ethos absent from much contemporary poetry and sorely needed in our world today."

Reading Sally Thomas's poems, I feel that I have entered another person's experience of life for a brief moment-- not the poet's experience necessarily, but the experience of the person in each poem. Thomas doesn't just tell you about someone's life-- she puts you in it. She is able, for instance, to give you the exact quality of the air and light in a particular time and place. These poems don't bowl you over-- they slow you down with their unexpected metaphors, inviting you to look deeper into life.
