I was just one of the countless crew chiefs working F-4 Phantoms on the flight line in Thailand during the intensive action packed latter part of the Vietnam War. This is my exciting life’s story with focus on my tour at Udorn RTAFB. There are numerous books written by various fighter pilots of their missions over Vietnam with exciting aerial combat. The support level on the flight line was also grueling, but in a very different role. This is my everyday life at the typical crew chief’s level keeping our fighters combat ready 24 hrs a day. Each new day brought a different challenge, dealing with sapper attacks, support for Operation Linebacker II, venomous snakes on the flight line, and living with the tropical heat and humidity. It was busy and it was noisy. Walk with me and experience what it was like in the crew chief’s everyday life on the line. — Sam Lassiter

Sep 30, 2016This is MY FATHER'S book! Read it today if you've ever wondered what it was like for Vets in Vietnam. It is also his life story. He talks about growing up, and his life before Vietnam, and afterwards. There are some very funny stories included. I even learned some new things about him because he never told me, he just decided to write about it!
Feb 5, 2016This book is very informative and gives the reader the feeling of being right there. I enjoyed the read
Feb 3, 2016I found it to be not only informative but also entertaining. Once I had started reading it I could not stop. As a dependent of an Air Force pilot later a career officer, it brought back many forgotten memories. I joined the Air Force for the reasons Sam did and went on to basic training where he did, so we shared many of the same experiences. I loved reading his personal accounts of his overseas tour in Thailand as a crew chief supporting the Vietnam War. Whether you served in the military or not, lt really gives you a feeling for what Air Force life was like--especially during the 1970s. He does not end there, he continues to enlighten the reader of his wonderful activities following his time in the service. I highly recommend this book. Colonel, USAF, Retired
Sep 10, 2015I have this warm patriotic feeling that there are lots of Samuel Lassiters who learned how to engage in civic and family responsibilities the honest hard work way and lived to tell their stories. The difference is that this author had the long vision to create a legacy for his loved ones and their descendants. Reading his autobiographical story gave me the whole spectrum of emotions, and more importantly, I learned Sam's lessons without having to go mach 1 in an F-4 (not that I'd pass it up). This up close account is a lot about where personal principles reside and what happens when you jump the barbed wire. If you wonder how one man can speed through a career of honor and awe, read F-4 Phantom Crew Chief, the true story of how Sam Lassiter filled up his bucket list to overflowing. I'm grateful for the chance to have this book on my shelf, because my children and grandchildren can learn its lessons, too.
