"Alternative Culture by Samantha Groen" Samy Groen’s Alternative Culture displays images that offer the viewer a different kind of idea concerning lifestyle. In contrast to a world of mass consumerism and dull every day life this photo book invites us to look at six young people and their alternative ways of living. The book’s structure focuses on these individuals and divides them from each other by introducing each character with their name, age and a word that clearly relates to the notion of youth culture. The photographs show the participant’s interests in healthy food, arts and dancing. Each one of them appears twice, with the first image demonstrating the different activities and the second one being a portrait. Samy manages to present her work in a very light kind of way that is enjoyable to look at. The colourful images are powerful and work well together even though they are related to different people. The way of alternative lifestyle can be clearly distinguished... More > throughout the whole piece of work which also means that it isn’t necessary for the book to have a lot of text in order to understand what it is about. Alternative Culture consists of a one picture to a page layout with the left book spread being left empty, which draws the viewer’s attention directly to the respective image. Also, the prints are represented on a white background and are organised as a group. This makes it possible for the viewer to flick through the book without having trouble to understand its purpose. There is a sense of movement flowing from each individual to the next within the related character and even though the pictures a strong on their own the book works very well as an object. Alternative Culture isn’t challenging the conventional book format. Samy’s way of representing alternative youth is simple but very sophisticated. Her photographs clearly distinguish a strong relationship between her and the subjects and the topic itself might be an insight into the author’s own way of living thus making this project very personal. Alternative Culture is certainly challenging the usual stereotypical ways of youth depicted by the media and I really enjoyed looking through it. It would be great to see more of the artist’s work in the near future.< Less
