"An Endangered Integrity" In his collection of columns from the weekly newspaper in York, South Carolina, where Sandy Howie has lived since 1957, Howie writes with grace and wisdom shaped from many years of hard work as Executive Director of a children's home. "The town liberal" according to the provincial mores of the small southern hamlet, Howie, long tolerated by his conservative friends, transcends partisanship in his writings. What shines through is, I fear, a snapshot of an endangered "Mayberry" lifestyle, in which a handshake is contract, a discussion over coffee at the locally owned pharmacy solves the world's problems, and everyone, at the end of the day, is on the same team, united by an unyielding communal integrity.
