In The Journal of Positional Chess Ideas: Winning Long Games, Scott Elliott presents and analyzes ten games that he played against the powerful chess program Fritz 13. The book should be most useful to the many class-level players who have reached a plateau and have not been able to find a way to move up to the next level. Elliott learned that most of his games against Fritz were lost for tactical reasons; so he kept a journal of ideas to help him learn how to beat the computer program. By testing the ideas listed in his journal, Elliott discovered that the best way to win was through superior positional play, and this book presents the positional principles that he applied in the 10 games analyzed here. The technique he used to develop the principles is described in a commendably candid introduction to the book. The many principles cited in the games should greatly assist most class-level players. The reader’s understanding of the principles is furthered through the spacing of... More > frequent diagrams. A diagram is given, on the average, every five moves or so. One advantage of this generous use of diagrams for the class-level player is that it greatly facilitates reading the book. Masters have little trouble holding in mind the sequence of moves in a game and the changing patterns that occur between widely-spaced diagrams; but most class-level players must set up a chess board to follow a game—especially a long game. Despite this book’s focus on positional ideas, those who read it will take a journey through ten entire games, with all of each game’s twists and turns. This process will expose the reader to every phase of chess play and will suggest many ways to improve one’s play in all phases of the game. A bonus is that Elliott’s technique of discovery can be adopted by any reader who seeks more. S.D. McLemore< Less
