This is such a good book, no waffle, no posturing, just the Psalter as Benedict envisaged it being recited, with adjustments to reallocate the psalms of Prime. As an Anglican, I am not one who thinks that the Office has to be in Latin, though it is lovely sung to the old chant. The translation of the psalms is good and above all readable.

For those with a hankering to read through the entire Psalter in a week following the Benedictine custom, this book may well meet your needs. I certainly was glad to get my copy. As mentioned in the description, it is attractively laid out in much the same way as 1979 Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. Although utilizing a different typeface which remains crisp and easily read, there is plenty of white space so it is easy to follow the text with the eyes. As an Episcopalian, I am comfortable with, and comforted by, what for me is a familiar translation of the Psalms. Others might prefer another translation, but there is much to be said for this translation. Reasonably accurate (after all, no translation is perfect), they were designed to be read out loud and thus have an appropriate flow and meter for those who wish to pray the Psalms out loud. I do not know if this is an ICEL translation that appears in other liturgical traditions’ prayer books, but if it is that would be all the more... More > reason to purchase this book. This is the hardbound version. Ideally, a book that would get as much use as this (after all, how many books are opened daily week after week) would by smyhte sewn. Unfortunately the cost of such a binding and the probably low appear of this book to the general public makes this cost prohibitive. Instead we have what appears to be the type of hardback referred to professionally as a case wrapped hardcover, which is a heavy cardboard cover with a clear plastic sealing over the cover. This makes for a very durable cover. My concern is not so much with the cover as with how the pages will hold up to repeated turnings. In spite of this, I anticipate using this book again and again. It is a wonderful book to hold and to read and a great tool for those who desire to read th Psalter in one week.< Less
