Travellers of the Wasteland (TOTW) is a fantasy role-playing game. It is set in a magical otherworld known as the Wasteland, a place of mystery, danger, and adventure. This is a world to be explored, through decision-making and daring; a fabulous realm as hauntingly familiar and maddeningly distant as a dream. To play, you will need: pencils, paper, some dice (the ordinary six-sided kind), a few friends, a fair amount of imagination, and of course this game.

This is a complete pencils-and-paper fantasy role-playing game designed for people who mainly just want to make up and play adventures. It isn't a clone of any other game; the author focused on designing the sort of game he wanted to play. It also avoids a lot of the details that really do not add to the fun of gaming; yet it's quiet easy to add the details you want. Mechanics are based on rolling three dice (3d6) and getting under or equal to a score. (As a personal note: games like this are fascinating in that you can easily adjust how things work; you could use a d20 instead without much effort, for example. If you still want to use six-sided dice but want to flatten things out, mark one die with 0, 0, 6, 6, 12 and 12; roll it with a regular die and you get a flat 1 to 18. Easy, simple, fast.) It is based a lot on four main attributes, but by deciding them in different ways and adding other game elements, a number of different characters can be created. It isn't class, level and... More > experience based: it's adventure based. The player characters adventure for the tangible rewards they get by doing so: fame, materials, friends, foes. Yet they can also advance in statistics: as the game master deems appropriate, bonus points can be given to add to their character's abilities for jobs well done. Easy and flexible. The mechanics are pretty easy to deal with. Much of the book is about the Wastelands and adventuring in it. It provides background notes, various ideas for peoples met and general environment, magic (and spells), monsters, and other concepts. The wastelands is intended to be it's own unique world, not just another fantasy land with stereotyped orcs, goblins, etc. (the author hints you can always add anything you want). It is illustrated with some nice art work; but, mainly it's about playing and adventuring. The author notes an interest in pick-your-own-path gamebooks like Fighting Fantasy. This game plays much like they do, but adds more depth and options without smothering the players. Sit down, look the rules over, then make up some adventure ideas and you can jump right into play.
