homeschoolers and the Public Library: A Case Study

ByScott Stanton

Homeschooling is a steadily growing phenomenon in the United States. Public Libraries are receiving a correspondingly higher level of demand for materials and services from this expanding user group. While libraries may not always be sure how to best serve homeschoolers within the context of their own staff and resource constraints, homeschoolers and public libraries are natural allies. This book provides an in depth review of recent research concerning the use of public libraries by homeschoolers as well as the results of on-site research conducted during a twelve week targeted program for homeschoolers at a community branch library in Connecticut. A contribution to understanding what homeschooling patrons really want from the library and how these needs can be reasonably met. The book also contains suggestions for successful service to this patron group and a model for a successful twelve week program for use in public libraries.
