THE COST OF DREAMING

BySean Madden

Fresh out of high school and truly lost in every way a person could be, a young man flees mainland America in search of himself, a home and some form of truth and meaning in life. He is betrayed by a friend and bound to the streets of Oahu, homeless, broke and alone, where he forms an alliance with a group of homeless squatters and beach bums and is soon immersed in the life of being homeless in Hawaii, only to witness and experience the ups and downs of such an ambiguous and dangerous lifestyle, seeing the ugliest in even the most beautiful of places in all the world. And it is in this paradox in which he finds himself and learns what life is really worth. This book chronicles many months of homelessness, when Mick spent his nights sleeping on beaches and park benches and his days scurrying around the streets, trying to find food and maybe a friend. It's the story of chasing a dream to the end of the earth, only to be abandoned, left alone on the streets, where survival becomes your only purpose.
