More > lasted forty years. It was a musical extravaganza based on The Forty Thieves from The Arabian Knights. A souvenir booklet was prepared, which included a novelized version of the story. Both play and book are included here. The Warlock, 1892, is an operetta which had a respectable run in Dublin. It opened earlier in the same year as the Grundy-Sullivan "Haddon Hall." The first acts of both are similar and engendered a squabble between Dublin and London newspapers as to whether Grundy was guilty of cribbing from the Dublin play's libretto. Il Talismano or The Talisman, opened in London in 1874. The libretto was originally written as an English opera based upon an episode of Sir Walter Scott’s "Talisman." The Innominato lived in late fourteenth century Italy, and was a mysterious wizard who possessed magical powers. The Innominato is the master of his own castle and is well respected and feared by all those in the area. The local nobles are wary of him, and the local peasants and burghers come to him for advice and help. His powers are never enumerated, but they seem to include clairvoyance, prophecy, and various magical arts. There are eleven tales that make up The Wizard Of The Mountain. Gilbert included it in his Original Plays of... More > 1876. Most of the songs and some dialogue have been deleted. The 1876 Princess was intended only to be a reading copy. It is the 1870 original which is included herein. The second play is Gilbert's Princess Ida (1884) with music by Sullivan. The dialogue is derived from Gilbert's The Princess. Almost all of the spoken lines of Princess Ida are imported from The Princess. Included herein are the First Editions of both the American and English Librettos. Shown are which lines from The Princess were used for each Princess Ida. The third play is an abridged presentation of Tennyson's The Princess by Laura Haughwout (1891). The major portion of the play consists of direct quotes from Tennyson's medley. It is completely faithful to Tennyson, while Gilbert calls his efforts Respectful Perversions.< Less
