This is a new printing of the 1922 Berlin edition of Andrei Bely's PETERBURG. Although it is superior to the rather cumbersome edition of 1916 and the later Soviet edition (in which various Christian... More > and mystical motifs were censored), the 1922 Berlin edition was never reprinted throughout the 20th century. This is the edition chosen -- for good reason -- by Robert Maguire and John Malmsted for their English translation of Bely's masterpiece. It is more dynamic and poetic than the long, heavy edition of 1916, and it is uncensored, unlike the later Soviet edition. The text of the novel is accompanied by the amazing graphics of St. Petersburg artist Aleksandr Tiumerov. His drawings are based on the statues and architectural ornamentation of St. Petersburg as well as the mythological vase paintings of ancient Greece and Rome. The text of the novel is followed by Robert Mann's commentary on Bely's use of mythological allusions in a polemic with Nietzsche's theory of Apollo and Dionysus.< Less
