Charles Searles (1937—2004) was an African American artist from Philadelphia, educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, who was active from the 1960s until his death. He created... More > paintings and sculptures that responded to a variety of cultural traditions— African, Japanese, Indian, etc.—and included abstract references to music as well as dance. Searles’ artwork is colorful, dynamic, and uplifting, communicating to viewers through a universal language that celebrates life and cultural harmony.
This catalogue is the product of two exhibition seminars that ran concurrently at La Salle University and Temple University during fall 2012. The seminars produced complementary exhibitions on view at both institutions in spring 2013.
