In 2008, while assisting in one of the Montessori schools in Indiana, the children asked me why I looked the way I look (brown). Most of them had never seen a brown person so close, leave alone... More > touching one. I felt the children were genuine and wanted to learn more about me. I approached “Diversity” which I thought was the underlying topic, from a soft ground. I talked about the different flowers, trees, animals...and finally people. I explained how each contributed to the beauty of the earth. As I continued to search for ways to extend the lesson about diversity, the song “We Are the People” came to my head and I taught it to the children. It was a thriller. Unlike my first class, I have written this short play imagining a class full of diversity, but still with a need for a methodology from a soft ground in order to carry out a conversation about diversity in this time and era. At the back you will find the music of both versions of "We Are the People." A CD is also available at your request.< Less

SIBBRA is a race whereby participants balance baskets on their heads and walk or run with them for a given distance. Balancing means; strictly not touching or supporting the baskets with the hands... More > once the signal to start is given. Violation of this rule, makes racers lose points. I adapted SIBBRA from the traditional way women in Africa and other parts in the Southern Hemisphere balance baskets of food, bunches of bananas and other things on their heads. It is a practice I too grew up with. Women balance things on their heads in order to carry more with their hands. I have created SIBBRA into a sport to share a cultural symbol of labor turned sport, from the Southern Hemisphere with the world.< Less
