This book looks at the question of the ‘true’ or ‘essential’ self. It argues that: 1) theories of the self are driven by the temperament of the theorizer, and 2) that the... More > philosophical tradition has been dominated by two temperaments, what William James called the ‘tender-minded' and the ‘tough-minded’. It also argues that: 1) a third temperament, the self-minded, is best suited to understanding the nature of the true self, and 2) that esoteric 'arts', such as astrology and the Enneagram, offer a powerful set of tools for understanding the individual self. Lastly, it suggests that social constructionist (entwined) and neuroscientific (embodied) theories of self are the creations of the tough-minded temperament and are limited in their scope. Astrological case studies of both Martin Heidegger and Donald Trump are included. It is argued that the tools used in these case studies are rejected by the Western religious/intellectual traditions because of a belief in both free will and scientific progress.< Less
