More > iconoclastic Victorian-era English author who published a variety of works. Two of his most famous pieces are the Utopian satire Erewhon and a semi-autobiographical novel published posthumously, The Way of All Flesh. He is also known for examining Christian orthodoxy, substantive studies of evolutionary thought, studies of Italian art, and works of literary history and criticism. Butler made prose translations of the Iliad and Odyssey, which remain in use to this day.Butler was born on 4 December 1835 at the rectory in the village of Langar, near Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England, to the Rev. More > Πολυλάς (13 Οκτωβρίου 1825-5 Αυγούστου 1896) ήταν Επτανήσιος συγγραφέας και κριτικός, διάσημος μαθητής και εκδότης του έργου του Σολωμού. Το λογοτεχνικό του έργο (ποιητικό και πεζογραφικό) είναι μικρής έκτασης. Έκανε επίσης μεταφράσεις αλλά είναι πιο γνωστός για τα κριτικά του έργα. Γεννήθηκε στην Κέρκυρα την 1η Οκτωβρίου 1825 (13 Οκτωβρίου με το νέο ημερολόγιο), από ευγενή οικογένεια με ρίζες από την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Έλαβε εξαιρετική μόρφωση, όπως άρμοζε σε έναν ευγενή, αλλά το πιο αποφασιστικό γεγονός για την εξέλιξή του ήταν η γνωριμία του με τον Σολωμό. Ο ποιητής επισκεπτόταν συχνά το σπίτι του Πολυλά, ως τον θάνατο της μητέρας του τελευταίου το 1841.
