The monologue is one of the established traditions in theatrical drama. From the Greeks to the present day, the monologue has functioned as the sole means of insight into a character’s psyche.... More > The monologue is a direct representation of their mind. In theatrical drama, the monologue is a sublime expression: an affirmation of self. It is through the monologue that the character speaking actualizes him / herself. And: it is essentially a form of self-talk. The film monologue was transfigured from self-assertion to self-actualization. In theatre it had been contemplative and revelatory, but in film it became not only the prime means to socio-political “message” or discourse but a defiant statement of principle and moral worth. It was now a potent dramatic tool again, fresh, invigorating and powerful. The 50 monologues collected in this book represent the scope of its potential: from the dramatic, political, feminist to the comical and fantastical. So… on to 50 Sensational Movie Monologues< Less

Michael Caine. He may be a two-time Oscar winner but at one point in his career his resume boasted more flops, turkeys and movie disasters than any actor would care to have on their CV. Though... More > his early screen career 1966 to 1974 courted American film directors such as Robert Aldrich and Don Siegel, Caine maintained a steadfast Englishness. Until, that is, the soaring taxes in pre-Thatcher Britain turned him, as it had his friends and fellow actors Sean Connery and Roger Moore, into a tax exile. Needing to re-establish his career in Hollywood, the decade from 1976 to 1986 saw Caine accept roles in films so bad the critics derided them. With flop after flop, loss after loss it seemed at this time that the future two-time Oscar winner was bound to be a box-office two-time loser. But Caine persisted, his career rebounded and by the time he returned to the UK was an American and international star.< Less
The Altrusitic Pornographer By Robert Cettl
eBook (ePub): $2.88
Pornography. As many continue to celebrate the numerous liberations of a post-sexual revolution in an increasingly sexualized popular culture and others lament the so-called... More > “pornographization” of said culture, it remains one of the most divisive issues of our time. Yet in pre-Republican Australia, there is anomaly – although pornography has been recognized as an issue of free speech in the USA, in Australia there currently exists no constitutional protection of said free speech and any government thus is effectively enabled to suppress whatever speech it likes, essentially for whatever reasons it sees fit. In Australia, this latest battle over acceptable discourse is concerned with religious vilification and the new anti-terror laws, there having already been books removed from library shelves due to their ideologically un-acceptable discursive content.< Less
Angels & Demons: A Rationalist Perspective By Robert Cettl
eBook (ePub): $2.89
Post 9-11 Hollywood is consumed by two intersecting ideological crises. The glut of ideological-moral-ethical-social and religious discourses emerging from contemporary Hollywood represents a... More > profound transformation in the way America reflects on the dynamics of secularism (and secular humanism) inherent in America’s Constitutional values but undermined by a Born-Again Christian President. Indeed George W. Bush’s War on Terror was motivated by Theist belief, the deliberate error of referring to it as a “crusade” for freedom being not only inappropriate but a coded message to his Religious Right power base.< Less

More > Academic libraries throughout Australia’s capital, Canberra. One of these, JD Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, was banned by the Department without then due process of submission to the Censorship Board. Under pressure, Minister for Customs Senator Denham Henty submitted the book to the Board, who promptly repealed the ban. Henty subsequently announced that all cases of “literary pretension” must be referred to the Censorship Board. Henty recommended the Board go through the current list of banned publications and recommend releases.< Less
Marvelous Movie Monologues By Robert Cettl
eBook (ePub): $6.49
The monologue is one of the established traditions in theatrical drama. From the Greeks to the present day, the monologue has functioned as the sole means of insight into a character’s psyche.... More > The monologue is a direct representation of their mind. In theatrical drama, the monologue is a sublime expression: an affirmation of self. It is through the monologue that the character speaking actualizes him / herself. And: it is essentially a form of self-talk. The monologue is distinguished from all other theatrical speech, being a dialogue between two or more people. In the monologue, the character is talking alone, to the audience yes, but essentially to him / herself. It is in the monologue that they express themselves to themselves, affirming their thoughts, their individuality and their purpose in the unfolding drama. It is dramatized self-talk, both that re-enforcing of personal character and revealing of the negatives of self-absorption.< Less
Deep Inside the Devil Made Me Do It By Robert Cettl
eBook (ePub): $2.89
Georgina Spelvin is a living legend in the X-rated erotica industry: as the subtitle to her book puts it – “erotic icon of the seventies”. An experienced and independent woman in... More > her late thirties when she freely chose to make adult “porn” movies, Spelvin rapidly shot to fame in the early days of the narrative adult film era after a starring role in one of the most acclaimed adult films of all time, The Devil in Miss Jones directed by Gerard Damiano. This film, and Spelvin’s subsequent work, emerged at a time when porn, although still only quasi-legitimate, was beginning to be reviewed by mainstream presses such as Variety and the New York Times. The legitimization of porn as adult erotic entertainment developed in tandem with Spelvin’s career in what she describes as “fuck films”. This makes her memoir an important social document of the immediate post sexual-revolution era.< Less
42nd Street Pete: The Interview By Robert Cettl
eBook (ePub): $3.62
42P, I’d like to begin this interview with a few personal and background questions regarding your experience on 42nd Street .  First off, “the Deuce” and “grindhouse... More > theatre” are terms that are now used nostalgically in such recent books as Sleazoid Express, which you have reviewed in your blog. To what time, place and type of movie do these terms refer?   I would say the time was from the early 1950's to when it shut down. The term “grindhouse” movies sort of replaced the term “bad movies”. In the mid 1980's, people started referring to 42nd Street as "the Deuce". It had also been called The Minnesota Strip because supposedly all the runaways came from the midwest and became prostitutes. Basically grindhouse films were soft & hardcore porn, horror movies, women in prison films, biker films, spaghetti westerns, cheap euro crime & spy films, drug & exploitation films, Kung fu & Samurai films, etc. Even some of your bigger budget mainstream films, like Death Wish fell into the grindhouse category.< Less
