The past, to their correlative positions, to compress them into space that brings them more within our grasp, and by rejecting the superfluous, and digesting the essential, to enable us to traverse... More > the vast ground of human attainment with pleasure and profit. The author, however, whose history is here presented to the English reader, in order to be duly estimated, must not be measured by a standard like this. To be appreciated, he must be measured by his own times. Neither are we to expect of him the condensed proportions, the judicious selections, and the comprehensive distribution of materials, that mark the productions of the scientific historian; nor was it the intention of our author. If we may be allowed to judge from the work itself, his object appears more like furnishing the materials, which himself or the future historian should handle with a more masterly hand or a more enlarged view.< Less

What is Gnosticism? Prognosis is a core concept of Gnosticism. The word comes from the Greek: gnosis, which means knowledge or insight. Characteristic of Gnostics is that they do not believe (in... More > religious sense), but the inner moral authority set up any external authority (within Gnosticism is no ecclesiastical authority). That inner authority comes from gnosis, knowledge. However, this knowledge is not rational (learned) knowledge, but an internal knowledge (self-knowledge through self-experience) of man. Through this understanding, you will come to terms with your conscience (later know). You go in search of what is going on in yourself (re-grant) to thus understand who you really are. The word gnosis is therefore related to know the Dutch word can (And. Know, Lat. Gnoscere).< Less

More > apologist, and his writings were formative in the early development of Christian theology. He was a hearer of Polycarp, who in turn was traditionally a disciple of John the Evangelist. Irenaeus' best-known book, Adversus Haereses or Against Heresies (c. 180), is a detailed attack on Gnosticism, which was then a serious threat to the Church, and especially on the system of the Gnostic Valentinus. As one of the first great Christian theologians, he emphasized the traditional elements in the Church, especially the episcopate, Scripture, and tradition. Against the Gnostics, who said that they possessed a secret oral tradition from Jesus himself, Irenaeus maintained that the bishops.< Less

More > (Χρονογραφία (Chronographia)), gives an epitome of universal history from the sources, arranged according to nations. The second part, the Canons (Χρονικοὶ Κανόνες (Chronikoi kanones)), furnishes a synchronism of the historical material in parallel columns, the equivalent of a parallel time line. The work as a whole has been lost in the original Greek, but it may be reconstructed from later chronographists of the Byzantine school who made excerpts from the work, especially George Syncellus. The tables of the second part have been completely preserved in a Latin translation by Jerome, and both parts are still extant in an Armenian translation. The loss of the Greek originals has given an Armenian translation a special importance.< Less
