Starting in 1872, George was the marshal, sheriff, and chief of police at a time when lumberjacks, Great Lakes seamen, and dock workers were not inclined to obey orders. His son, John Henry, and his grandson, Don McCarthy, worked hard to provide for their families with mining and mill jobs.
