Who was Fritz Jahn? He was best known in Germany during the first three decades of the twentieth century as the “game pastor.” He was the son of Gustav Jahn, the head of the rescue... More > mission in Züllchow near Stettin, now in Poland. Fritz, born in 1863, took over that role in 1888, a position he served until 1931. He wrote more than a dozen books on games of all kinds. They were incorporated into the education of the children at the rescue house and books and manufactured games were sold in support of that work. But Fritz Jahn, the artist, while once known to family, friends and others, remained undiscovered until November, 2007. An inadvertent discovery of an on-line auction resulted in the acquisition of a portfolio of 183 separate pieces with 211 sketches, drawings and watercolors, once owned by the German theater critic Georg Hensel. This collection of the 27 extant watercolors done by Fritz Jahn is the first public display of this work for close to one hundred years. Text in both English and German.< Less
