More > present an authentic transcription of the lute tablature, and presumably changes a few notes that are modal and might sound strange to an uneducated philharmonic public. He also chooses variations to omit, most likely for the sake of brevity. The version here does not claim to be a faithful representation of the original lute music, but is quite accurate with respect to John Williams' performance.< Less

In 1972, Columbia Records, under the label of Masterworks, released an album by John Williams titled, Virtuoso Variations for Guitar. Included on that recording was a piece by Mauro Giuliani, a... More > famous guitarist/composer from the classic period. He borrowed a theme from G.F. Handel's The Harmonious Blacksmith. In this arrangement, Williams omitted variation 3, which is one of the most charming of the entire work. Most assuredly, this was done due to the limitations of vinyl and the recording technology of the day. However, this does not explain some of the changes Williams made to Giuliani's harmonies. Nevertheless, if this was your first introduction to the classical guitar, you have no doubt longed to play it as Williams did. Now you can. The fingerings have been added by me to facilitate ease of play. But as always, the player is free to change them.< Less
