More > 8-week Community Planning and Design studio at Kansas State University completed the work during the summer of 2017. The studio was co-led by Associate Professor Blake Belanger and Associate Professor Howard Hahn. The effort was supported with funding from the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation (WDDC) and Kansas State University’s Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB). Delano’s Turn is presented in two Volumes. This book, Volume 2: Critical Maps includes over 100 research-driven maps that investigate issues, identify opportunities and dilemmas, and propose planning and design strategies for the Delano District. Volume 1, also available on Lulu, presents refined urban design ideas derived from the critical maps.< Less

Kansas State University landscape architecture students have spent the summer of 2010 addressing these dilemmas through two projects: the Build a Better Burb design competition in Long Island, New York and proposals developed in partnership with five cities in the Kansas City First Suburbs Coalition. The projects encapsulated in this book cover a range of ideas. Some are theoretical while others are concrete. Some are prototypes; others idiosyncratic. While they all address community-level concerns, many projects also operate at larger or smaller scales. Each proposal addresses multiple dilemmas facing First Suburbs, but no single proposal claims to solve them all. The projects do not offer a panacea, taken individually or as a whole: rather they take a step in the right direction.< Less

As an academic research and design inquiry, the studio chose to approach dilemmas and opportunities of the corridor from a visionary perspective with a planning horizon of 2040 and beyond.
