Yield is a catalog of photographic studies from 2006 through 2009. I present this work not as a photographer but as a young architect, using the medium of photography to speculate on light and... More > shadow, the consequences of form, and the behavior of material. Ironically, it is a collection of textures, patterns, places, and situations that have emerged or endured without (for the most part) the presence of the architect. Once formalized, accidental design becomes strategic design. Yield refers to a general collection or take, of work produced through iteration, reassessment, and over time. Yield also describes a general phenomenon: the recognition of architectural vernacular as a contextual give and take, the patination of surface by weathering and use, and the opportunities for spatial and programmatic flexibility through a crafted ambiguity. Likewise this publication is loose, largely ambiguous, and subject to change.< Less

More > eager to leave behind the crowded and expensive living conditions in Tokyo. Tama promised cheap housing, generous open space, and an idyllic setting for young families. In January 2009, Tama’s affordable housing is fatigued if not decrepit, and more often than not entirely derelict. The eager parents that moved in 40 years before remain, their children grown and long gone. Tama lacks the jobs and infrastructure to atract them back, and so the town continues to age. Last Resorts Thesis Hardcover By Buck Sleeper
eBook (PDF): $0.00
A two meter rise in sea levels projected by the end of this century threatens the sovereignty of the Maldivian nation state. While flight from the Maldives to establish a new homeland elsewhere has... More > been proposed, the culture and economy of this country is inextricably entrenched in its geophysical environment. Although the Maldives is known for super luxury resorts, the nation’s government is poorly positioned to defend a population of 400,000 people spread across 1200 islands. This thesis proposes a strategy by which the international resort operator, an autonomous and independently funded entity, can be mobilized as an agent of coastal defense. Also investigated are issues of artificial reef ecology, defensive coastal infrastructures, and prefabricated composite construction and modularity. Thesis Supervisor: Ana Miljački Title: Assistant Professor of Architecture< Less
