ANTICIPATION (David Smith) By David Smith
eBook (PDF): $6.25
“Anticipation” recorded on “Anticipation” (BJUR 015) c2006 David Smith / Sumisusan Music / BMI The thrust of this tune is a three-part counterpoint in the chordal part, as... More > each voice makes its way through the tune the resulting harmony has some surprises and some dramatic shifts. Rhythmically there are two chords per bar, both “anticipated” an eighth-note ahead. This builds tension against the quarter-note feel in the drums, and the tension continues somewhat relentlessly throughout. The melody is built off of the opening phrase and plays rhythmically around the chords, often anticipating the anticipations. I usually play this with trumpet and tenor in true unison, which puts the tenor way above the top of the horn at one point, but it can work any number of ways. Included is the melody lead sheet and the chord chart for piano or guitar.< Less
HALLOWEEN SONG (David Smith) By David Smith
eBook (PDF): $6.25
“Halloween Song” recorded on “Circumstance” (FSNT 267) c2005 David Smith / Sumisusan Music / BMI This song was a long time in the making, it initially came about when I... More > intended to write a simple song in which the bass notes were the melody. I ended up harmonizing the bass notes with triads, which gave a “spooky” sort of sound with some severe harmonic shifts. I later added a triplet melody line of broken chords somewhat inspired by the D minor prelude from Book I of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier. The obvious thing to do was then to harmonize that line into triads, which ends up amplifying the “Halloween” aspect some more. This happens over a hard-driving swing from the drums, and is a rewarding challenge to play. Included are transposed trumpet and tenor parts, a guitar/piano part, and a concert lead sheet for the rest of the rhythm section.< Less
ALONE (David Smith) By David Smith
eBook (PDF): $6.25
“Alone” recorded on “Anticipation” (BJUR 015) c2009 David Smith / Sumisusan Music / BMI This tune came about when my wife and daughter were away for a couple of months, the... More > first separation I’d had from my daughter and I was feeling somewhat, well, alone at the time. I happened to be listening to the Mozart D minor piano concerto (No. 20) and the opening few measures put the seed of an idea in my mind. The result is a mixture of three different feels simultaneously; a very fast swing feel in the drums, a very open bass feeling each measure as a beat, and then a quasi-Brazilian figure in the piano/guitar. With the melody on those underpinnings I tried to capture some of the feeling that I had at the time. There is a countermelody as well, and the form is ABA with the last A a transposition of the first. Included is a concert melody chart with both melody lines and charts for both piano and guitar.< Less
