Our Oakland is a project undertaken by the ninth grade students of Life Academy to tell the stories of their community, through short essays, poetry, and photography. The project is anchored by two... More > separate oral history models: Anna Deavere-Smith’s Twilight Los Angeles, 1992 and Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago by Lloyd Newman and LeAlan Jones, teens who were given tape recorders to document their neighborhood. Similarly, Life Academy ninth graders documented their neighborhoods. Our Oakland is not a definitive picture of life on the east side. Students were guided to look at things they want to change, so this compilation is sometimes sad. The same students who have documented the problems in their community also love it and would hate for this work to condemn “The Town.” It is only by looking closely and listening to the residents of the place they love that any change will be possible.< Less
