These stories cover the almost 50 years I was associated with N C State University, both as a student and later as faculty. A few relate to my early years growing up in Tryon, NC. There is an... More > element of truth/fact in each. I have added a number written since leaving the University and moving to Windsor Point, a retirement village in Fuquay-Varina, NC. Many of these stories were inspired by my new friends there. Several are based on some innocent event or act which would provoke little or no interest if re-told precisely as they happened. To these I have "enhanced" the truth, somewhat, to make them more interesting. I hope you will forgive my boldness. A few are pure fabrication based on a story I had heard, or some idea on which I wanted to elaborate. You may be unable to distinguish the fabricated ones from the others.< Less

Factor-Comparison By Fred Eargle
eBook (ePub): $3.99
The Factor-Comparison method of job evaluation provides one of the more accurate and versatile procedures of analysis because of its quantitative approach and unique means of job comparison. ... More > Factor-Comparison finds a broad spectrum of uses (across functional lines) in hourly, supervisory, professional, and managerial situations, both in factories and offices. The rationale of this method is that all jobs are compared against each other, on a continuous point scale within each factor, and then arranged in factor-hierarchies. Individual factor-hierarchies are then combined into one overall hierarchy, or list. It is a "quantitative system," so-called because a numerical point value is assigned to each job factor.< Less

In the absence of a formal objective rating system, the activity of assessing human performance will occur on an informal, less objective basis. Each manager is continually rating each subordinate... More > as to who turns out the best work, who needs help, whom to recommend for promotion, and so on. To deny a formalized, objective system is to produce an adverse effect upon the organization and the individual. This book concentrates on the establishment of a Validated Performance Appraisal instrument based upon observed behaviors of the employee, while correlating them with various degrees of job performance. The format described here is a Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale - generally known as the BARS format or procedure. Korean War Diary By Fred Eargle
eBook (ePub): $3.99
I began this diary on July 1, 1950. Our ship, the USS Valley Forge (CV-45), was in Hong Kong, China when the news of the North Korean attack on Allied forces arrived. We left Hong Kong and went to... More > the Philippines and Okinawa to take on supplies. I recall one of those days in which we loaded supplies most of the night in the driving rain. I participated in that - working on the flight deck for hours in a rain so heavy it was as if standing under a waterfall. We were all soaked to the skin. Our ship served a vital function in that undeclared war. We did our part in getting our ship and warplanes from one destination to another, on time, handling the radio and teletype traffic vitally necessary for that operation. For the most part, I stood watches in Radio II, the Main Transmitter Room, where I was supervisor. This diary is dedicated to the Radiomen and Telemen with whom I served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Valley Forge (CV-45), OR Division.< Less
