DEAD MAN'S SHADOW By Mick Mercer

DEAD MAN’S SHADOW were my favourite of the early 80’s punk bands. Alongside their fine Stanwell compatriots Action Pact, here was a band that also had character and melodic adventure... More > whirling through their musical veins, at a time when such notions were in short supply. Here we have some excellent memories, starting with the first foray into studio activity, as a five piece, then whittling themselves quickly down to their better known trio status. Other gig shots come from the Iberico, Chelmsford Y Club, Stanwell ‘Genesis’ Youth Club, the Marquee, a couple of great posed sessions for ZigZag magazine, and a few shots relating post-DMS Mancubs activity. 321 photos in all.< Less
THE POPINJAYS By Mick Mercer
eBook (PDF): $7.82
Download immediately.
Another of my favourite Indie bands THE POPINJAYS make for a great subject as a photo book because they changed so much through the years, as the 721 black and white photos and 68 flyers/documents... More > will prove. They’ve had more bassist than you have had musically themed dinners, and went from the essential duo of Wendy and Polly up to a full sized band, although actually there’s a trumpeter on a couple of songs early on, which just seems weird. There’s also a lot of different venues and not just the early home base of the Bull & Gate, although it’s fitting that it begins and ends there. As well as a lovely posed session from 1989 this book also takes in Market Tavern, Canterbury University, the Borderline, ULU and the Marquee. This can surely inspire you to dig out their records, which still sound as good now as they did back then. A great band, and herein you’ll find great memories.< Less
