More > technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in particular. The dissertation offers a coherent understanding of choice, transition, and retention in terms of perceiving the construction of student identities as continuous processes. The dissertation shows how choosing what to study are social processes in where various interests constantly are negotiated and personalized. Difficulties associated with encountering higher education STEM are accompanied by a sense of a gap between student expectations to the study programme, notions of attractive identities and their actual experiences. The dissertation show how students apply different negotiation strategies to bridge the gap. The implications of this study are discussed in terms of how to support students to meaningfully construct attractive STEM identities.< Less

It was an activity, offered in the context of Science in the... More > City, a science communication “festival”, parallel to the conference European Science Open Forum. While there is some research in this area, it is still a very new field, where sound cases of practice are lacking. It was the intention, with Science Moves to develop material where participants enacted kinaesthetic models to represent scientific ideas. While those models were constructed, we learned also about the conditions for collaboration with expert scientists and interactions with the general public. During this project, we have developed written material that can be used for teaching and disseminating complex scientific ideas, while at the same time producing empirical data that can be used both as a documentation of the process and for science education research.< Less
