Her first published work was My Little Corner in 1872. In 1874 came one of her most famous books, Christie's Old Organ, which has been regularly reprinted up to the present day. It is the story of orphaned Christie and his friend, the aged organ-grinder Treffy. It was introduced to Japan in 1882 and was published in 1885 by the translation of Tajima Kashi. Yu Keng was a member of the Manchu Plain White Banner Corps(正白旗) and according to his daughter was a Lord. Yu Keng's daughters Der Ling and Rong Ling (1882–1973, the future Madame Dan Paochao of Beijing) therefore got a western education, having studied dance in Paris with Isadora Duncan. Upon return from France, Der Ling became the First lady-in-waiting to Empress Dowager Cixi, as well as a translator. Der Ling had a brother, Xunling (ca. 1880–1943), who studied photography in France and later took the only photographs of Empress Dowager Cixi still in existence. Der Ling wrote down her unique experience in court in her memoirs Two Years in the Forbidden City, which were published in 1911. At age 16, Joe Jr. biked 1700 miles over mountains and deserts to Fresno and on to a Hill Family in Lemoore, CA. There he met Maude Buttercup Hill and married her in Fresno, 21 Oct 1902. After Birdie was born in Fresno, Joe and Maude migrated northward to Washington. There their three other children were born: Alma Evelyn, James Joseph, and Robert William.
