More > two before moving on, often to another railway centre. The population of Swindon as a whole expanded rapidly throughout the nineteenth century. The parishes of Old Swindon, the original small town up on the hill and New Swindon, the GWR company town in the vale below, became one borough in 1900.
The New Swindon Church of St Mark was consecrated in 1845 and, by 1900, there were four ‘daughter’ churches in the parish; St. Paul’s, St. John’s, St. Saviour’s and St. Luke’s. For some time, the baptism entries were entered in the registers of St. Mark as well as in those of the daughter churches. Because many of the workers came from outside Wiltshire, there is the potential to track down many missing “stray” family members.< Less
