This book documents the seventh annual Laskey Award, a weekend “Design Challenge” for sophomore students in the architecture program at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at... More > Washington University in St. Louis. Ted Krueger, Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was invited to design and administer the Challenge. He asked students to work in teams over one weekend, beginning by perceiving an invisible architecture within the architecture we normally see. From here the students must find a way to build this invisible phenomenon and communicate their discoveries in the form of a three dimensional construction. The first prize-winning project used tent-like forms to replicate the variations in magnetic fields surrounding electronic machines within the school's digital fabrication lab. The other eight projects were equally imaginative. Includes sixty color photographs and five commentaries.< Less

Mehrdad Hadighi, founder and principal of Studio for Architecture and head of the Department of Architecture at Pennsylvania State University, was invited to design and administer the Challenge. He asked students to work in teams over one weekend, beginning by slicing a coolant reservoir found in cars into two non symmetrical parts. From these parts they were to create a three dimensional sculpture capturing the reservoir’s “plastic moments”, as well as a two-dimensional collage documenting its linear and planar geometric qualities.< Less
