Emile was a prolific artist who lived in Victoria, BC, with his partner Michael Woodman. He worked with both paint and hand-made felt to reveal the human form and display abstract images. He paid... More > such great attention to detail in creating his art, that it was not uncommon for him to ask someone on the street or a friend if he could study their hand or face so he could capture the grace he saw in life. Art Deco painters such as Tamara de Lempicka influenced Emile’s art, but his struggle with HIV also taught him to live each moment, and in turn, embrace and breathe life into his creativity. As a young man Emile trained as a pastry chef, worked for a chocolatier, started his own croissant business called C’est Bonne, and wrote and illustrated his own cookbook How to Bake a Cake. Emile passed away in 2003 surrounded by friends and family, but not before creating a huge collection of distinct and stunning art that showed his passion for life.< Less

Pictures On My Pillow: An Oceanographer's Exploration of the Symbols of Self-Transcendence By Patrick Bernard Crean
eBook (PDF): $9.99
Pictures On My Pillow is the entertaining, lucid and thought-provoking autobiography of Dr. Patrick B. Crean, a Canadian ocean scientist and accomplished amateur philosopher/theologian. Written... More > frankly and with great period detail, Crean's accounts are buoyed by an inimitable wit and a poignant recounting of his childhood, between the great wars, in rural England. His teen years would culminate in three expeditions to the Antarctic whaling grounds as a chemist. Crean's career in chemical engineering and physical oceanography continued with his immigration to Canada in 1953. In 1958 Crean met the Canadian Catholic theologian/philosopher Bernard Lonergan whose vision of the universe would encourage him to develop a foundation from which his own eventual feedback model and worldview would emerge. Thus Pictures On My Pillow provides a practical application of the feedback model that Crean presents in Science, Self-Knowledge and Spirituality (ISBN 978-1-897435-60-1).< Less
