The first collection of letters were sent by Andrew to his brother, Thomas in Selkirk, from 1804 to 1809 covering his early days as a military surgeon. They recount the life of a young Army Hospital... More > Mate in the early 1800s, his move to London, “It is an immense town this, go I where I like I can never get out of it”, where he began his training in the York hospital Chelsea, and his first action in Sicily when he was based in Messina. There are first-hand accounts of the Seige of Flushing and Walcheren in 1809 and his return to Weeley Barracks in Colchester, after his appointment as Assistant Surgeon to the 79th Highlanders. These letters cover the death of two of his brothers, Alexander, who went on the ill fated trip with Mungo Park to Africa and John who died of a tumour to the brain. The second are from his first wife, Anne Cairns,when Andrew was Surgeon to the 92nd Highlanders in 1819. These are particularly poignant as Anne describes the terrible impact of yellow fever on the regiment.< Less
