Chester Smith, a 23 yr-old, wheelchair-bound black youth from the hinterlands of Mississippi is a graduate student at Stanford University when he volunteers for a hypnosis experiment at the medical... More > school. Lo! In repeated trances, he unexpectedly regresses 2000 years to a past life as Jesus Christ. He even utters ancient Aramaic, Christ’s principle language. Dr. Shonna Rice, heading this research, proclaims that past-life regressions are pure fabrication. But when the media learns of Chester, it hypes him till the Christian world spins into religious frenzy. Even the Vatican sends over a pair of sleuthing priests to investigate. Young Chester achieves true superstar status. Here’s the crux: might he, in fact, be the Second Coming or a channel for the Lamb of God or is he something far different? God only knows!< Less

Many communication systems are poorly modelled by the standard channels assumed in the information theory literature, such as the binary symmetric channel or the additive white Gaussian noise... More > channel. Real systems suffer from additional problems including time-varying noise, cross-talk, synchronization errors and latency constraints. In this book, low-density parity-check codes and codes related to them are introduced and applied to non-standard channels.< Less

Channel Characterisation and System Design for Sub-Surface Communications By David Gibson
eBook (PDF): $54.62

Based on the author's PhD thesis, this book is a theoretical study of subterranean radio communication, with the focus on methods that depend primarily on the penetration of electromagnetic fields... More > through the ground. Through-the-earth communication using e-m fields - specifically magnetic induction - plays a role in search and rescue systems used in the mining industry. It is also used for borehole telemetry, pipeline location and by cavers and pot-holers. Chapters describe propagation, antennas, and the design of transmitters and receivers. A figure of merit - the specific aperture - is introduced as an aid to antenna design. A crucial aspect of all systems is the signal to noise ratio, for which the strategy of noise-matching is introduced. The design of a wide-band low-frequency sounder is described, for channel evaluation using a non-ideal binary sequence. A method of calculating the inverse of a generalised sequence is described, for which cross-correlation results in a system identification signal.< Less

Streambeds provide for the necessary habitats and spawning cycles of a healthy fish population. Oregon law requires underwater hydraulic structures to provide proper fish passage. Increasingly... More > stringent regulations apply to fish passageways, and designers must consider a range of flows to accommodate fish movement and avoid structural failure. Fish passages, culverts or bridges, are built where roads cross streambeds. “Roughened channels” technique re-creates streambeds with the hydraulics necessary for adequate fish passage. This report examines long-term success factors for implementation of fish passageways, especially in the construction phase, and examines whether failures are due to inadequate range and mix of material gradation; unexpected water velocity; or inadequate mixing or compaction of materials during construction. Other factors may include the relationship of downstream slope to structure slope, well-graded fine soil materials in channel fill, and frequent site visits.< Less
