The book “Lusona: Geometrical Recreations from Africa. Problems and Solutions” presents ninety problems. Each time, some figures or patterns are given. Although they have different sizes,... More > they are constructed with the same construction rule. The task consists of finding other figures of the same type that are missing in the given sequence of patterns. The figures or patterns presented in this book are in the style of traditional African sand drawings, which are called ‘sona.’ The singular of ‘sona’ is ‘lusona’ in the Tchokwe (Cokwe) language spoken in Eastern Angola and neighboring areas of the Congo. Each of the given figures is composed of only one closed line. This line may cross itself many times and embraces all dots of the reference frame. The book “Lunda Geometry” explains how the mathematical concepts of mirror curves and Lunda-designs were discovered in the context of the author’s research of ‘sona’,... More > illustrations traditionally made in the sand by Cokwe storytellers from eastern Angola (a region called Lunda) and neighboring regions of Congo and Zambia. Examples of mirror curves from several cultures are presented. Lunda-designs are aesthetically attractive and display interesting symmetry properties. Examples of Lunda-patterns and Lunda-polyominoes are presented. Some generalizations of the concept of Lunda-design are discussed, like hexagonal Lunda-designs, Lunda-k-designs, Lunda-fractals, and circular Lunda-designs. Lunda-designs of Celtic knot designs are constructed. Several chapters were published in journals like ‘Computers & Graphics’ (Oxford), ‘Visual Mathematics’ (Belgrade), and ‘Mathematics in School’ (UK). (198 pp.)< Less

eBook edition in color of the Italian version of book for children. Traduzione: Giovani Nicosia.< Less

The ‘sona’ tradition belongs to the culture of the Cokwe and related peoples in Eastern Angola and neighboring areas of Northwest Zambia and the Congo. Observers have described... More > ‘sona’ as sand graphs, sand drawings, drawings in the sand, writing in the sand, pictographs and ideograms, and as a system of communication. The ‘sona’ tradition is multifaceted. It comprises aspects that are philosophical, educational, artistic, ideographic, and recreational. The book shows that mathematical considerations were involved and developed as the Cokwe invented ‘sona’ and built up a reservoir of symbolic-graphic expressions. The book presents an analysis and reconstruction of mathematical elements in the sona tradition. The first English language edition in color contains an updated bibliography and an appendix with a brief introduction to new mathematical ideas that came out of the study of ‘sona.’ Translation and Preface: Artur B. Powell, Rutgers University, Newark, USA; 248 pp., over 500 illustrations in color.< Less
