The country borrowed a lot of money under the pretext of utilization in converting Sudan into a food basket. Such plans did not materialize in good results. There were economic problems that prevented the country from paying the debts, arrears and interest rates. The entrance of oil discovery and commercial utilization in 1999 did not ameliorate the situation. The newly generated income was not used in improving the agricultural schemes, industry neither paying the accumulated debts. Increased security, arms buying and expanded governmental expenditure consumed most of the oil money.< Less
