The Principled Libertine: The Ethical Case for Sexual & Erotic Freedom By Desmond Ravenstone
Paperback: $8.96

The Religious Right opposes gay and lesbian equality, sex education and access to birth control, all in the name of upholding a “traditional” code of sexual morality. Radical feminists... More > join them in denouncing pornography, while liberals collaborate and compromise all in the name of “protecting” children and families. In this concise but scathing critique, Desmond Ravenstone proposes a challenging alternative: that sex should be viewed just like any other activity, and that respecting diversity and choice is more ethical than imposing a narrow set of rules. In questioning everything from the idea of sexual “addiction” to the effectiveness of abstinence-only curricula and sex offender registries, Ravenstone provides a contrarian counterweight to today’s return to puritanical restrictions in how we think and talk about sex.< Less

Seven Spectacular Compounds and the folding project that spawned them By Jonathan Filley

This is an account of a project undertaken to see if simple organic compounds can be synthesized and assembled into large folding molecules, akin to proteins. The hope was to make enzyme-like... More > molecules easily and cheaply for industrial catalytic reactions. While only limited success can be claimed in making folding molecules this way, many of the smaller monomer precursors which were made during the project turned out to be easy to make, inexpensive, and formed beautiful crystals—hence their description as spectacular. These compounds could be incorporated into undergraduate organic chemistry lab curricula, or they could serve as starting materials for projects requiring multifunctional compounds. This book provides synthetic and spectroscopic details for approximately thirty compounds, and also x-ray crystal data for a few compounds which showed exceptional behavior. Out of these thirty compounds, the number of truly spectacular ones came to seven, forming the title of the book.< Less

This book is an introduction to or refresher course in higher mathematics for practitioners of digital humanities. Its purpose is to impart the concepts that underlie the mathematics they are likely... More > to encounter and to unfold the notation in a way that removes that particular barrier completely. It should enable humanist scholars to address complicated technical material with confidence. The individual subjects we tackle are (in order): logic and proof, discrete mathematics, abstract algebra, probability and statistics, calculus, and differential equations. This is not at all the order in which these subjects are usually taught in school curricula, and indeed, it is possible to take a course of study that does not include all of them. Our ordering is borne of our own sense of how best to convey the concepts of mathematics to humanists, and is, like mathematics itself, strongly cumulative.< Less
