Collapse of WTC7 By David Barnby

This book is a technical evaluation of the work carried out by the US National Institute for Standards and Technology and Professor Bailey at Queen Mary College, London. The work raised many... More > questions, questions which, for the writer as an engineer, needed answers. Fundamentally the question was how the conclusion that office fires were responsible for the building’s collapse was reached, when: - No one apparently witnessed burning debris entering WTC7 floors through its windows. - Fires didn’t burn long enough and hot enough for the integrity of steelwork to be compromised. - Steelwork debris was not analysed to determine temperatures reached because it was disposed of prematurely. - No-one witnessed the collapse initiating event and subsequent progression of collapse (no-one, unsurprisingly, was inside the building at the time) yet detailed conclusions were drawn as to the sequence of structural failure events that lead to total collapse and was therefore due to office fires.< Less
Mr Worsley By David Winkley

Mr Worsley is a hard-to-believe portrait of life in a school in the 1960s. Despite its engaging sparkle of high-comedy, this is a true, autobiographical account of a young teacher’s early steps... More > into the profession at a period of educational change. The central character is the unforgettable Mr Worsley himself, headmaster extraordinaire, a figure of grandeur and insight, as well as improbable eccentricity, commanding a school which is as successful as it is bizarre. Enter a dream-like and fantastic world: a reality both familiar and disjointed. 400 years ago in the Civil War, one region refuted the conflict and fought to protect its people. It endures; beyond... More > all maps, a land of limitless marshes and scattered communities; autonomous, independent and aggressively neutralist; a land of ancient tradition and savage law: the Old Country. In the east, the War of the Line rages interminably, a conflict so long no-one seems to remember its purpose, only that it must be sustained. When the cathedral is destroyed Alex and his wife flee the city and head for the Old Country – for a home, and a chance for peace. But the world and the past are not easily left behind. When the floodwaters begin to rise, when the investigating agents close in, with love fractured and the imperatives of power bearing down, how will they find the moral courage to make a stand in the face of the cataclysm? How far will they have to go, to find a measure of peace? And who is Roman Thorn?< Less

The only people who spoke to me were the occupational therapist, and my wife during her brief daily visits. When the course of events strayed from the norm, it was merely accepted by the nursing carers. All decision making was the prerogative of the consultant who is responsible for the patient at all times unless he has appointed a similarly qualified stand in. No-one would be so bold as to query a consultant, he always knows best. It is my belief that this practice is what is wrong with the NHS.< Less

When there is nothing to do Do nothing By David George
Paperback: $12.67

There are pitfalls aplenty in this book. These dangers include your taking a literal interpretation of the title. Finally, you say, someone has given me permission to take the rest of my life off.... More > You don’t need my permission to do this. How about living as a forest monk? There are many benefits: The tax breaks are fantastic, you pay no taxes; there are the sounds of silence; sometimes you go many weeks without anyone annoying you; and, most of the time you sit with your eyes closed, and no-one complains. The downsides include: Chores, but as these are light when you become venerable; you need to beg for food at the nearest town; only eating once a day; oh, I saved the best bit for last, no sex. I am not in a hurry to be a monk. Besides, it would be a blot on my resume. Not that, that is a concern since I retired. As my career did not set the world on fire, I took the easy way out and retired early. If you think that this option pandered to my lack of ambition, then you guessed right.< Less
