The History Of Sunderland AFC To 1887/88 By Paul Days
Paperback: $8.14
Prints in 3-5 business days
The first historic account of Sunderland AFC appeared in the two Wearside dailies, The Sunderland Echo and the Herald, in December 1887, by which time the club was well established and important... More > enough to have its history recounted. This account was written only a few brief years after the football clubs’ formation and yet both reports contain inaccuracies, jumbled facts and confusion. A critique of the first article in the three part series, in particular, would be both illuminating and quite scathing. The transcript of that three part series, that you are about to read, published in 1887 was consolidated and sold as a booklet by The Sunderland Echo and it could be purchased for a nominal sum by members of the Sunderland public. No copies of the original book has, as far as we know, survived.< Less

In Volume II we meet a new rival for SAFC, Sunderland Albion. Formed following a falling out between James Allan and the club he formed in 1880, Albion would take up residence at The Blue House Field... More > in Hendon; Sunderland AFC’s first home. Sunderland AFC didn’t like Albion, they were considered to be a threat, and the men from Newcastle Road did everything they could to undermine James Allan’s new club. Volume II will also introduce us to Sunderland AFC in red and white stripes, it will inform us all about the very first floodlit game on Wearside as well as introducing us to a legendary SAFC Secretary (manager), Tom Watson. By the end of Volume II Sunderland AFC, significantly, would be elected to The Football League. Deservedly elected they had, by the end of the 1889/90 season, taken on all comers from The Football League and defeated most of them, sometimes very heavily. This volume sets the scene for the 1890’s where Sunderland AFC would blaze a trail through British football.< Less
World Champions Sunderland AFC 1894/95 By Paul Days
Paperback: $23.75
Prints in 3-5 business days
Having been elected into the Football League for the 1890/91 season Sunderland AFC wasted no time in getting to grips with the higher standard of football. League Champions in 1891/92, this was... More > followed by another league crown in 1892/93. Runners up to Aston Villa the following season, The Black Cats made no mistake in 1894/95 when they swept almost everyone aside, bar bogey team Aston Villa, who knocked the red and whites out of the FA Cup at the semi final stage of the tournament. Still the club’s third league championship, an FA Cup semi final and perhaps quite quirkily crowned Champions of the World, could clearly mark this out as yet another superb season for the men from Wearside. There was a record FA Cup win, the game of three halves and also the legend of the Hemy painting was born. The league championship was won at a canter, by five points from runners up Everton.< Less
