It is also important to look at the role or lack of role played by particular research fields. Architecture plays a major role in city planning. While archaeology has become increasingly involved in field projects in urban environments, the discipline seldom plays an important role in city planning. In several countries and particular cities this situation has been questioned during the last decades. In May 2015 a group of scholars from different countries met in Valencia to discuss about the relationship between Architecture, Archaeology and contemporary City Planning. This book collects the final papers from that meeting.< Less

More > have created new figures involved in the process of facing architecture and archaeology. In this workshop we will focus on possible new ways of collaboration between architects and archaeologists. With a particular stress over the intelligent use of digital solution for documenting, designing and representing the contest and the new ideas. We wish to open a new kind of communication between these research fields and related praxis. The possible contributions from archaeology include questions of conservation, diffusion of archaeological knowledge by different means. We hope this workshop will help to open this field, and that it will be followed by other scholarly meetings on more limited particular cases and questions and, potentially, by a larger conference building on the workshop’s outcomes.< Less

This book documents an exploration of emergent and linear modes of defining space, form, and structure. The thesis highlights a dialog between analog and digital modeling techniques, in concept and... More > project development. It identifies that analog modeling techniques, coupled with judgment, can be used to develop complex forms. The thesis project employs critical judgment and the textile techniques of crochet as a vehicle generate form. Crochet lends itself to this investigation because it is a serial process of fabrication that allows for the introduction of specific non-linear modifications. The resulting emergent forms produced by this mode of working can be precisely described by digital modeling techniques. These analog crochet models are translated into the digital through the employment of advanced digital modeling tools. This translation enables the visualization, development, testing, and execution of an architectural space, form, and structure.< Less

Information technology is imposing itself as the central paradigm for a new phase in all of architecture; the dynamic interconnections at the heart of IT are being transferred from the world of... More > digital models to the reality of a reactive, sensitive, interactive architecture. The structure chosen for this book was to avoid a “crib sheet” on the “IT Revolution in Architecture.” The formula of the “treatise” was just as impossible to use not only because many aspects of contemporary scientific research are oriented toward a structure that remains intentionally open and serves to launch new hypotheses rather than solidify certainties, but also because this aspect is reinforced by the material that by its nature finds itself in an free, interconnected, intrinsically problematic dimension.< Less
