This book is mainly a collection of essays I published between 2001 and 2013. Most of those essays appeared on VDARE.com, an online magazine dedicated to frank discussion of the National Question.... More > The penultimate essay in this collection defines the National Question and offers an answer to it. That essay also describes the work of VDARE.com in more detail. It concludes with an unofficial VDARE.com mission statement.< Less
Freedom of Speech in England: Its Present State and Likely Prospects By Sean Gabb

We live in a world where Lady Chatterley’s Lover is an A Level text, and where documentaries about oral sex are shown on television. Even so, the battle for freedom of speech has not been won.... More > More fiercely than ever in England, it rages on other fronts. There are panics over the promotion of terrorism, and the alleged sexualisation of children. Above all, there is the official war on “hate.” In the name of good community relations, or simply to protect minorities from being upset, whole areas of debate that once were free are now policed. Dissidents risk punishments that range between formal imprisonment and unemployability. In this set of often controversial, essays, Sean Gabb puts the case for freedom of speech in the changed circumstances of today. His subjects include holocaust denial, the possession of child pornography, the rights of BNP members, and the persecution of Emma West, the South London “Tram Lady.”< Less

Very little is published on the repression of dissenting historical research and political opinion in Europe. "Censorship" is something that happens only in Burma, China, Turkey, Egypt, and... More > other far-away places. Censorship in Europe is simply a "matter of criminal law"! The "law" is almost completely one-sided and the defendants are almost invariably so-called "right-wingers" and "nationalists". In Germany, dissidents can be charged with 3 different offences: "popular incitement", "incitement to racial hatred", and "defaming the dead". The statute of limitations is 10 years, as against 3 or 6 for most serious felonies. No transcripts are made of oral argument before the courts, and no substantive defense is possible: defendants are permitted to argue technicalities only. Lawyers "guilty" of defending their clients too vigorously are commonly imprisoned as well. One case, however – the records of which are reproduced here – took an unexpected turn when the wild-card defendant refused to cooperate...< Less

A Child of the Sea, and Life Among the Mormons By Elizabeth Whitney Williams

This is the vivid memoir of a mid-nineteenth-century girlhood spent mostly on the islands of Lake Michigan and the onshore communities of Manistique, Charlevoix, Traverse City, and Little Traverse... More > (now Harbor Springs), written by a woman who grew up to be a lighthouse keeper on Beaver Island and in Little Traverse. The major portion of the book is devoted to her eye-witness recollections of James Jesse Strang’s short-lived dissident Mormon monarchy on Beaver Island. Strang was expelled from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints after disputing Brigham Young’s right to succeed Joseph Smith. Eventually he and his own loyal followers settled on Beaver Island and attracted a stream of new converts; at their demographic peak, the "Strangites" numbered 5,000 strong. Strang saw himself as a prophet and believed he was in accord with divine revelations. Williams describes the mounting tensions between Strang’s followers and the "gentile" residents who fled the island as Strang’s influence grew.< Less
