Brewers and Distillers by Profession By Raymond Gale Anderson

As we approached the 125th anniversary of the Laboratory Club, the oldest component of what has become the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, we decided to celebrate the event by commissioning a... More > new history. A book on the history of the Institute of Brewing was already in existence - this covered the period up to 1951 and marked the Institute’s centenary. There had however been no published history of the Brewers’ Guild which amalgamated with the Institute in 2001. A fresh look at the circumstances of the birth of what became the IBD, and the totality of events since 1886, was the most attractive if also the most demanding approach. Telling the story of two organisations whose activities overlapped - and sometimes collided - before they hesitantly came together, adds particular challenges. No apology is made for rigorously documenting the sources used in this book, but it is my intention to temper scholarship with humanity and perhaps even humour; to provide insight into the personalities involved.< Less

As part of a larger study of the strategic arms competition which developed after World War II between the United States and the U.S.S.R., this study of the two countries’ strategies for air... More > and ballistic missile defense addresses two broad subjects: (1) How did each country approach the problem of defense against the threat from the air? (2) Why did each country accent particular elements of an air defense strategy at various periods between 1945 and 1972? The first question concerns the means that leaders chose for defense against an increasingly sophisticated offensive threat. For the most part, the history of that sequential selection of defenses from available technology and budgetary resources is a matter of evidential fact. In Chapters IV and V and several appendices of chronologies, tables, charts, maps and notes, this volume provides a distillation of those facts for the 1945–1955 period. The second question, by far the more difficult of the two, concerns elite perceptions and motivations...< Less

Meat From the Mystics: Sermons on the Song of Songs Vol. II By St. Bernard of Clairvaux J. Scott Husted Editor

Within these pages is the central idea that Love created us out of love to share Love itself -- and then was bound by love to redeem us after we had been lost. God's gift of the Incarnation of... More > Christ is proof of this. Therefore the ultimate point of all theology, the culmination of all of life, the summit of all God's works, is the experience of the presence of God -- the union of the human soul with God himself. Bernard's 86 Sermons presented in these two volumes allegorically interpret the Song of Songs; they distill his theology of love, but more than that, they open a door for all who will approach, to the deepest experience man can enjoy. Like other commentators, Bernard views the relationship between the Divine Word and the individual soul as a spiritual marriage between the heavenly Bridegroom and the human bride. But unlike other writers, he fully develops in these pages the picture of spiritual marriage as the point of human existence, and more than that, the goal of the heart of God.< Less
