In the spring of 2013, the fourth course of four focused on utopias and dystopias, and this volume is a collection of those papers. It is organized by student, and each student has a utopian writing... More > followed by a dystopian writing. The assignment was to first write a utopia, which we described loosely as “a generally better place”, or a picture of the world with its problems fixed. The second assignment was unique. Instead of just writing the dystopia as “something generally worse” or how it all looks when society collapses, the exercise was to take the fix from the utopia –the whole reason it was a better place, and have it be the core problem of the collapsed society in the dystopia. Again, whatever made life utopian, must corrupt or corrode and be the cause of the dystopia. Even worse, the students did not know about this until after they had written their utopias.< Less

These poems, experiments done over thirty years, test the fluctuating boundary between normal uses of words and compressed, figurative uses. Some of these poems are about people the speaker (not... These poems do not describe malformed societies but work instead on the level of one individual's sense of things gone wrong beyond his or her own little sphere of twentieth-century American life. Toward the end of the book are some adolescent effusions, not to say ejaculations. Many of these poems are written in free-verse, full of discontinuities and dream images. Many are not rhymed and metered, but instead experiment with the movements of the reading voice as guided by line lengths, typographical spacings, and unconventional punctuation.< Less
