The inspiration for this project arose from a discussion of the common cliche' of the use rasterized and low resolution type in kitsch graphic ephemera. Rather than denounce it, the team decided to... More > use it as a spring board for this project and provoke questions; what does rasterized type blown out of proportion in scale look like ? How does this scale shift affect the carefully drawn curves of the glyph ? At what scale does the shape of the character lose its identity and turn into a blob of pixels ? To answer these questions, the glyphs of Akzidenz-Grotesk were put through a long drawn torture digitally, and then taken into the physical space as a 10ft X , 10ft installation and created on a grid using hemispheres cast in varying tonal range as pixels.< Less

In this exhibition, curated by artist and art critic Robin Dluzen, the grey areas between established genres are explored by these five emerging artists. Diana Gabriel and Emily Hermant each present... More > site-specific works, with Gabriel’s linear-patterned, fiber installation bringing drawing into three dimensional space, and Hermant’s hand-rendered “wallpaper” challenging the distinction between slow handmade processes and fast-paced digital communication. Luis Sahagun intermingles “high art” materials with the “low” stuff of everyday life with a series of floor and wall pieces that embody both permanence and ephemera. For Catherine Schwalbe, an intimate, ceramics studio practice is a catalyst for her large-scale social practice, here manifested in an indoor garden of edible greens for viewers to harvest. Rusty Shackleford’s series of works are neither paintings, photographs nor typical collages, in an innovative gestural painting and digital scanning process that’s unlike anything else.< Less

There is not much difference of opinion as to when Town is at its best. Perhaps a few misanthropists, wrapped up in their little selves and their narrow thoughts, would shut themselves up during the... More > season, in order to escape the pain of witnessing us all in our ungodly career. Shallow butterflies they call us. And what do they know about our lives? They judge from appearances; and because we wear a cheerful expression, shutting down our cares and struggles in our inmost hearts, and not burdening other people with them, we are called shallow and worldly. No, you good and godly people, what do you know about us? You are no more capable of judging than the ephemera, which lives but for a day, and so must consider the world all sunshine, all light. How can it imagine the night which closes round later on, when neither it nor any of its ancestors have ever lived to see it? . . .< Less
Fangs for the Memories By Andy Sanson
eBook (ePub): $3.93
Way, way, back in the day, a young man leaving school and thrust into the real world without so much as a boat, never mind a paddle, found himself wallowing in the sepia world of a nineteen sixties... More > dental laboratory that reused to drag itself out of the Between The Wars Years. This is his story - my story. Not, as you may think, so much about a dental laboratory as the goings-on of the Management and Staff and the not-always-pc stuff we got up to. Music and motorcycles played a large part in my life, as did drinking too much and staying up late as well as all the other ephemera associated with the late teenage and beyond years of one who was more interested in The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and dental nurses than molars and the tools and materials of the trade - apart from the inflammable qualities of some of the chemicals we used. Hope you enjoy. And if you do, there is Volume Two just a few days away< Less

It started with a few isolated incidents. A mob shootout in Las Vegas, a firefight in the Central American jungles - one apparently unconnected event after the other, hinting at a worldwide... More > conspiracy of unprecedented proportions. But before long CIA computer expert Bob Leith realises it's something much more than mere globalised terrorism, something literally not of this world ... "A tight, fast-paced, Bournesque thriller wrapped around a science fictional core that shifts scale so rapidly it gives you vertigo. Heartily recommended." - Neil Williamson, author of The Ephemera & co-editor of Nova Scotia.
