More > commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Sent to fly with the famous 56th Fighter Group, which achieved fame by destroying more enemy planes than any other group during WW2, Vic flew a total of 63 combat missions over Germany, receiving the Air Medal seven times for "heroic action above and beyond the call of duty". On April 13, 1945 he rec'd the Distinguished Flying Cross when he took over for his squadron commander and led the squadron in destroying many planes and material at Eggebek airodrome. The total that day set a record, 92 German planes destroyed on the ground, with many more damaged. It was a record for WW2. He later completed 41 years in education as a school teacher and principal.< Less
